Firstly, I would like to wish Pure Clan a very happy birthday. It's 7 years old today. Therefore, I would like to share the history of Pure Clan with everyone from old school gamers to the new breed gamers.
I remembered clearly one night in end of March 2001, Jo came up to me to have a talk. We talked at the sidewalk of the current Kaya n Toast and Goh Fun Kee Bak Kut Teh in 3rd mile. He told me that Vince and the rest of the guys were planning to form a CS clan, and invited me to join them. I was truly honored to be offered a spot on the roster and I accepted the invitation.
Then a few days later, Vince, Jo, Sze Lee, Malcolm and Me were sitting at the cafeteria in Inti College, thinking of what clan tag shall we use for our clan. Ideas came in, and in the end, Vince came out with the clan tag "PURE". Everyone was happy about the name, as it resembles the purity of every aspect in life you could think of (right, Vince..as if..lol)
Recruitment started. Jo and Vince brought in many of our friends in and out of the college. I clearly remembered our first clan match was against a team called SFW. The match was held at Battle.net in Tabuan Jaya, now known as Queen's Court. Marvin, Wilson the friendly giant, Lik Shin, Vince, Jo, Sze Lee, Malcolm and I played in that match. On de_dust, we surprisingly upset the odds and beat SFW, who were a more established team back in the day. Soon, confidence was built. We took in more of our friends into the team. Kenneth Liew, Roland, Tim Aron, Willy, Kat Kong, Lucas, Michael Lian, Shen Tak and a few more joined in the clan. And believe it or not, we had SO many members till we needed to have 3-4 teams.
Playing public servers were such fun during those times when every member used our old school [PURE] tags and played against SM in Indigo. We would shout and scream like nobody's business and laugh at SM Sky's " Chiawww..refill Chiaww.." (which was supposedly "Chiaw..defuse c4" -.-;
Then, we started having HUGE clan wars. 10 on 10 matches was HUGE. We had some lucky wins and many humiliating loses. I clearly remembered 1 incident particularly. We had a home-away 10-on-10 game with Forest. Away, we lost like f**ks.. a very humiliating defeat which resulted to Tim leaving the clan for 9pm. We had 1 week to plan for our home game against Forest. I felt so amazed and touched when we grouped together at a coffeeshop below M3 ( now Tai Soon Motor) to discuss our tactics, bringing sheets of papers and dust2 map to place our positions and stuff. When the day came, we still lost, but all of us knew that we tried our best and the scoreline wasn't as bad as the away game.
Guys came in and out of the clan over the years. The Indonesians, Basel, Lim, Wee Yang, Ben, Clement C and T, Sengz, Dylan, Maurive, Wui Yong and etc came in as the new blood of Pure. Old timers like Lucas, Willy, Wilson, Malcolm, Lik Shin and Marvin paved way due to their respective commitments. When the 2 most established clans in Kuching, Team.A.InteL and Forest disbanded, players like Caesar and Alvin Dao joined in the family. So did Kenneth Lim/LJ and Spencer from team e2k. And in 2007, Ying Jie/Vash completed the cycle of Pure Clan members.
I honestly felt that match results were secondary ever since the end of 2003/4. The sense of brotherhood upstaged it all. Pure Clan was not primarily a counter strike clan anymore. It was more like an identity or a social clique. Like what Vince told me, "Deek, results do not matter. Just as long as we all have fun, thats good enough". Yes, I did disagree with him for a period of time as my ambitions were more than that. I played for many other clans to fulfill my ambitions, but then again, deep inside, I knew that in the end of the day, I would go back to Pure. As I sit down now while enjoying my 'retirement', come to think of it, what Vince said was really true. We are a band of brothers who stand up for one another and have fun together. We may have misunderstandings and friction from time to time, but f**k, we are all human beings.
In Pure Clan, we have a few customary practices which I would like to share with everyone.
1. We celebrate our clan's birthday every 1st of April. (i'm gonna miss my 2nd one .. dont wanna mention bt the 1st tho >.<)
2. Whichever members who have found a significant other, the particular member has to treat the rest of the members for makan selamat, which reminds me... CB 45, when r u gonna pay up.. wtf man!
3. 2nd Day of CNY Gathering/Gambling Session at my house!! haha
And the list goes on!
There's no other clan than Pure Clan if you talk about friendship, brotherly love ( though it sounds gay i know) and such.
Oh well.. Happy Birthday Pure!
