Here's how it goes. Firstly, the points accumulated by teams in past competitions are tallied, obviously the ranks of the teams are based on their total points. Normally, the seedings of the teams is actually an estimation of which round the team is expected to reach. Therefore, 1st and 2nd seeded teams are expected to reach the finals; 3rd-4th seeded teams are expected to reach at least the semi-finals; 5th-8th seeded teams are expected to reach the quarter-finals are so on. This seeding helps participants to estimate which are the stronger teams. However, this does not necessary mean that an unseeded team is weaker than a seeded team. Remember as mentioned above that teams are seeded based on their rankings and achievements in past tournaments. Seedings are just an advantage or bonus given to better ranked teams due to their past achievements. Teams with seeds do not need to draw for their slots in the competition. They are automatically given depending totally on their rankings. Other teams that are not seeded will still have to draw to confirm their places in the competition.
Lets take the 16 bracket table as shown as an example.
This is how seedings are allocated:
As mentioned, seeded teams only meet each other in the quarter-finals, provided they do not lose to other teams first. The remaining slots not occupied by seeded teams are then filled with the non-seeded teams through drawing.
As a note: Do not confuse between rankings and seedings.
Rankings: The position of a team due to its accomplishment and achievement in past tournaments. Points are gathered by the placing of the team throughout all the competitions that the team have participated in.
Seedings: The seedings of a team in a single competition are based on their rankings.
Here are some frequently asked questions on Seedings.
Q: How come some teams are seeded higher in the competition when their ranking is much lower?
A: Not all teams participate in all competitions. For instance, if a rank 5th-8th team does not participate in a certain competition, automatically, the team that places the next nearest rank will fill in the 5th-8th seeded spot. eg. Team X (ranked 7) does not compete in the tournament. Team Y (ranked 9) will automatically be shifted up to fill in the 5th-8th seed.
Q: Team 12345 is a rank 4 team. In this competition, they decide to change their team name to Team Z. Why is it that they are not seeded?
A: To prevent any abuse in the ranking system, teams that change their team name have their rankings reseted. This is because the ranking is achieved by using that team name. Not the new one. However, if they change their team name to eg. Team Z.12345 they would still have their rankings remained. This is due to the fact that they are still using the team name. This situation can be seen through ESWC 2008 where the counter-strike team PGS moved sponsors to MYM. In order for them to attain their auto-qualifying berth in the finals, they had to change their name to MYM.PGS
